The Engineering Manager reports to the President, jointly establishes performance objectives for the Engineering Department and ensures their achievement.  The Engineering Manager manages an engineering team consisting of engineers, project managers, draftsmen, and administrative support staff.  The Engineering Manager plans, directs, and coordinates activities of the Engineering Department to design, process, develop, produce, improve, and test components, systems, and services.  The Engineering Manager takes a lead role in product development.

 Duties and Responsibilities of the Engineering Manager:
 

Assign projects to Project Managers / Engineers and oversees their progress to ensure customer specifications are being met.

Provides direction and oversight to Drafting, Electrical, Sheet Metal and individual areas of production.

Supervises Engineering Assistant to ensure accuracy of data in software with regards to bills of materials.

Ensures that changes, new development and corrections to product designs are communicated throughout the necessary areas.

Coordinates production schedule with Production Manager, and ensures its implementation.

Provides direction to Quality Assurance to ensure accuracy in testing procedures.

Leads Engineering Department meetings; participates in Production meetings.

Manages and coordinates product development, working with sales, marketing and production to determine opportunity and competitiveness of new products / design.

Creates a robust NPD funnel based on market drivers and competitive opportunity.

Develops and maintains a comprehensive assessment program for product and component performance evaluations.

Generates departmental objectives, budgets and resource allocation plans to align with business goals and objectives.

Requirements for the Engineering Manager:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is required.  A master degree in engineering or an MBA is a plus.
  • IET Certification required; Certified Professional Engineer is highly desirable. 
  • 10 years electrical or mechanical engineering experience with three years managing an engineering function is required
  • Well-developed leadership, management and product development skills are required.
  • Effective interpersonal skills are required in developing effective relationships with managers, supervisors, employees, and other critical stakeholders.
  • Effective computer skills with a proficiency in the use of data systems as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access software as well as engineering and drafting software is required.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills are required for coaching and counseling employees at all levels and interacting with supervisors and managers and documenting processes and policies.
